CTC and Dr. Lynne Beal, formerly the Co-ordinator of Psychology with the Toronto District School Board, have taken leadership in the development of Insight, an innovative cognitive skills assessment. Insight is based on the widely accepted Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) Theory and is designed with the view that it can be group-administered. Insight assesses the CHC-defined abilities known to be important for the development of reading, written language and mathematics. These pre-defined abilities include the following: fluid reasoning, crystallized intelligence, short-term memory, visual processing, auditory processing, long-term retrieval, and processing speed.
Insight will accommodate group assessments for grades 2 through 7, making it convenient for administration in the classroom or other settings. Teachers have minimal involvement in the administration of the tests, as all of the directions and stimuli, both visual and auditory, are presented through DVD. The script of the DVD was written by the author, Dr. Lynne Beal.
The student reports will provide overall Insight scores as well as ability index scores. The global and index score reports to teachers will make it clear that Insight is simply a screening instrument and that hypotheses about a student's abilities must be tested by a school psychologist. (More detailed score reports will be provided to school psychologists.) Teachers will also receive a booklet describing the relevance of CHC theory to education and an explanation of the specific skills that are measured with Insight.
The tentative publication date for Insight is January 2011.
