Scoring Guide

All the problem solving tasks at all levels of CAT·3 are scored with the same scoring guide. Being able to use the same scoring guide for all tasks at all levels provides educators with a powerful tool for tracking student achievement over the years and across the grades. The scoring guide presents a graduated series of statements describing a range of student achievement. The scorer selects the statements in the scoring guide that best describe a student’s response and then assigns the score associated with those statements.

The scoring guide for Constructed-Response Mathematics consists of two scoring categories or scales: Problem Solving and Communication. The scorer assigns a score from 1 to 5 on each of these two scales. The two scoring categories—Problem Solving and Communication—provide the scorer with a systematic way of identifying and measuring various qualities in students’ responses.
